Since today’s ‘Fun Fact Friday’ post coincides with International Women’s Day, we thought it would be fun to focus on Boise’s “Ribbon of Jewels” – which honors some of the remarkable women of Boise!

DID YOU KNOW?  Boise, Idaho has the beautiful Boise River running through it – a ribbon of water, if you will – that anchors various parks throughout the city.  These parks honor some of Boise’s finest civic leaders, past and present, all of whom are women!  We call this Boise River/Greenbelt/Park combo Boise’s “Ribbon of Jewels.”

There are 12 Park Jewels in the ribbon – or, actually, 11 parks and one trail – honoring these women.  This prestigious list includes:

  • Alta Harris (park is planned for but, as of yet, undeveloped)
  • Ann Morrison
  • Bernardine Quinn
  • Bethine Church (the river trail)
  • Dona Larsen
  • Esther Simplot
  • Golda Harris
  • Julia Davis
  • Kathryn Albertson
  • Kristin Armstrong
  • Marianne Williams
  • Sue Howell (park is planned for but, as of yet, undeveloped)

You can read more about each park and the women who inspired them on the City of Boise’s Parks and Recreation Department page, here:

2nd FUN FACT:  Boiseans LOVE OUR PARKS!!!  In fact, per the Boise Parks and Recreation Department website, Parks & Rec “maintains more than 90 developed parks across the city, approximately 210 miles of Ridge to Rivers trails in the Boise Foothills, 25 miles of the Boise River Greenbelt pathway and thousands of acres of open space. The department’s recreational facilities include Zoo Boise, two municipal golf courses, pools, Idaho Ice World and more.”

You can check out all of these facilities here:

Of course, ALL of our parks are jewels – not just the ones on the river!  Here’s to maintaining Boise’s green spaces in perpetuity!!!

Thanks, again, for reading another Fun Fact Friday post!
